About
The Responsible AI initiative is an Apache Software Foundation effort to strengthen the open source technologies that underpin modern AI, and to support ASF projects and communities as they adopt AI responsibly.
As Sally Khudairi, VP, Sponsor Relations, has stated:
AI runs on open infrastructure. AI systems worldwide depend on critical Apache projects. Our new initiative ensures that those ASF projects that are deeply embedded in AI systems have expanded access to the models and resources needed to remain secure, transparent, and governed in the public interest.
How it is organized
The initiative is led by a Vice President, Responsible AI, an officer role established by the ASF Board. Jeff Genender was appointed to the role in July 2026. The VP coordinates the initiative's work and its resources, including this website, the mailing list, and related repositories.
The work follows the Apache Way of collaborative, vendor-neutral development. Volunteers organize around four work streams, described on What we do; anyone can take part through the channels listed on Get involved.
