FAQ
What is the Responsible AI initiative?
An Apache Software Foundation effort to strengthen the open source technologies that underpin modern AI and to help ASF communities adopt AI responsibly. It provides access to AI models and tooling, ecosystem support for AI-focused projects, and a place to share good practices. See About.
Who leads it?
A Vice President, Responsible AI, appointed by the ASF Board. The work itself is open to contributors from across the Foundation and the wider community. See About for the current officeholder.
Is the initiative's guidance binding on my project?
No. The initiative offers guidance, resources, and shared good practices. Apache projects remain self-governing and adopt what is useful to them.
What principles guide the responsible use of AI at the ASF?
Four core principles — human oversight, licensing integrity, security, and documentation — rooted in the ASF philosophy of community over code. They are set out in full on What we do.
How can I get involved in a specific area?
Volunteers organize around four work streams. Pick one from What we do and reply on the mailing list to join it.
How can I take part or ask a question?
Through the mailing list or the ASF Slack channel — both are listed on Get involved.
How can I support the initiative?
See Support the initiative on apache.org.
This FAQ will grow as questions come up on the mailing list.
